Dr. Bauerlein--Lit blog for 2/12

First off the miss USA pageant girl was a poor example to show our generation is dumb. For one, it was one bad answer and coming from one person. I bet everyone else in the class would have answered it better and correctly so one person screwing it up doesn't make our whole generation dumb. The Jay Leno segment also doesn't mean anything. I'm sure some people they found might have answered them right, but would they air those ones. No, because they're doing it for laughs. The questions were also geared mostly toward literature. Dr. Bauerlein claims that some technology is making us dumb, mindless, and lazy. He said some people didn't know who our allies were in WWII but what does technology have to do with that. People in my high school who didn't know that and did poorly on standardized tests were the ones doing drugs, drinking all the time, and who just didn't care about school. There were people like that in his generation too. Technology had nothing to do with it. Its his generation teaching us so there is the problem. He also focuses on one area of study, like we said in class. I bet if we asked him a psych question or a CJ question he wouldn't know it...so I guess he's dumb too.

  1. I also found it ridiculous that the entire generation would be judged by a miss USA pageant girl. I also believe that most people could have answered that question correctly. I also agree that there were many people in the Leno skit that knew the correct answers and those were not aired because I knew many of the answers he was looking for. I know where you are coming from when you said that the people in highschool that did not know simple questions like who our allies were in WWII and who did bad on standardized tests are the same kids that were on drugs and did not care. They are the kids who do not care about furthering their education and do not go to college and end up working in Mcdonalds for ever. There are people like this in every generation but I feel that more and more people are going to college now.

  2. I have to wonder whether or not Jay Leno knew the answers of the questions before he looked them up. I bet you he had no idea and like you said is just doing this all for laughs. I also believe that there are "dumb" people in every generation. Education is what you make it. If you want to learn or engage yourself in something then you will. If it is simply not your interest then you won't. So who is he to say what we should and should not know when quite frankly his determinants of being "smart" involved only his area of study?

  3. I think its funny how based off of the few people who don't comprehend basic knowledge and education, our generation is termed the dumbest generation. Its impossible to assume that everyone is just as dumb as some select individuals. It is how the media portrays us that helps people decide how smart or dumb someone is. And yes, as it seems to be in the nature of our media, they tend to take pleasure in other people's faults. Thus they promote it, and thus, our generation seems to be brought down by a select few individuals.
